Mona’s quick tips to surviving a holiday weekend…

4 Jul

Remember your goals this weekend! In my own experience and in my type of work, I see people forgetting their goals and totally blowing it because of a holiday. This leads to guilt, shame and can set set you back if you are not careful. If you don’t absolutely love something, don’t eat it! Alot of times we will load our plate with food because that is tradition or it is something  we have always done. Ask yourself this question, how has that worked for me in the past? When going to a BBQ, don’t worry about hurting people’s feelings by not eating their food, after all you have to live with yourself. Offer to bring greens, that way you know you can at least have a burger salad. If you are having a gathering at your house, send temping foods home with family and friends. Make sure you are getting in all veggies and use your fruit as a dessert (here is a recipe for fruit dip, perfect with strawberry’s and apples) fruit dip. Most important,  drink your water!!! Try and not let food run your life, you are in control.

Hope you have an amazing weekend!

The Lithia Challenge and the Blue Slide Walk

29 Apr

Have you ever been so passionate about something that you couldn’t seem to think about anything else? You wake up and go to bed thinking, what can I do to make this happen?  The thought of standing downtown screaming for your cause has crossed your mind, but you would only do it as a last resort. For the past year and a half I have done nothing but think about the Blue Slide Project. I have to admit when my brother passed away I felt my passion leave, but it was only for a brief moment. I knew he wouldn’t want me giving up, and I could hear his voice telling me, “what are you doing? You’re going to let this stop you from achieving your goal? That’s dumb.” Nothing really mattered at the time, my heart was so sad.  Somehow I found strength and I continued my fight for those who are not able to access the playground because of a disability.

A few weeks ago I decided to do something drastic for the Blue Slide Project, as you know I have been on a weight loss journey and so far I have lost 60 pounds. I still have a ways to go, but day by day I am reaching my goal to be healthy and fit. I have been walking as exercise since February, and each week I increase my miles. There are 33 miles between Medford’s (Oregon) wheelchair accessible playground and our Blue Slide in Grants Pass. On May 31st, myself, Pam J., and Carmen L. (maybe a few other PTA mom’s) will be walking the 33 miles bridging the gap between the 2 playgrounds, showing the need for accessibility in our schools and parks and raising money to finish Phase 2.

The new General Manager at Lithia of Grants Pass heard about our project and the walk, he decided to make the month of May Blue Slide month. For every car sold in May, Lithia will donate $100 to our project,  they are also challenging other car dealerships and businesses in our community to do the same. We are having shirts made for the walk, a $100 donation will get the name of your business on our shirt and $250 donation will get your businesses logo. If you would like to be a part of this challenge or would like to sponsor “the walk” please  contact Mona Pinon by email monapinon5@gmail.com or visit http://www.facebook.com/TheBlueSlideProject for more information.

Sometimes you have to do something loud to be heard, some people picket, others write letters, I will walk!
